At least thirteen passengers perish and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The president announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was closely associated with his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in public works. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in total compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
