Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's first goal, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves the manager's team up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton stay in 14th position and are six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in role at both ends of the field

Following a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, Frank opted for the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an free the defender to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's absence - added his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defensive duties, combining well with Kevin Danso as the duo handled excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans headed to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a major concern for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' two recognised centre-forwards - had netted just a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having room and time to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, as well, was unable to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. Most of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly delivered threatening crosses into the Spurs penalty area.

Everton: The team travel to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on early November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: The London club go to Newcastle's ground on late October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle.
