During an initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” New York City, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious commencement to his term.

A Historic Figure

The young political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Defying counsel to be modest, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my convictions for concern of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households

The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the richest residents and big business.
